Baby born on sailboat on Ashley River

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - A family welcomed their newborn son into the world Tuesday morning not in a hospital, or even on land at all.

Jack Benjamin Midence was born at 8:01a.m. on Tuesday, May 15 while aboard his parents' sailing vessel, the Kitty Hawk.

Nicole Midence and her family were on their sailing vessel Monday night when she went into labor. The family called their midwife, who arrived at the ship docked at Ashley Marina at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning as the family prepared for the birth.

Jack Benjamin was born less than seven hours later in a natural birth. Nicole's husband Jack says he, "got to catch the baby on his way out." The healthy newborn weighed 8 lbs. 1 oz.

Jack Benjamin's sister Marietta, who is 18 months old, greeted her sea-worthy brother with kisses and hugs, says their father.

The event was entered into the ship's log, the father said.

Cops investigate after man shot at apartment complex

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Charleston police are investigating a shooting that happened at an apartment complex around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Investigators say a citizen called police after hearing shots fired outside building 136 of the Bridge View Apartments located on North Romney Street.

According to police, a 26-year-old male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was taken to MUSC by friends before officers arrived on scene.

One of the tenants at the apartments claimed to have seen a gun near the bushes in front of building 136, although police said they didn't find a weapon. However, officers said they did find several shell casings in front of the building and a bullet hole in the window to an apartment.

No one was in that apartment at the time of the incident, police said.

Other tenants reported hearing between five and eight shots fired during the incident.

Special Thank You's went out to Debi's Kids partners for their efforts providing gifts and meals for families during the holiday season.

Last year, SA bell ringing volunteers collected $190,000 in kettles. Debi's Kids and the SA Angel Tree, with the public's generous support, provided Christmas gifts for 4800 children in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

Army dad surprises kids at RiverDogs game

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Captain Angel Guzman is trading uniforms from Army green to RiverDog blue. It's no mid-season trade...he's suiting up for a big surprise.

"We've been lying to him we told him it's the end of the month. I guess we'll have to explain good lies versus bad lies to him now," said Guzman.

For the past 18 months Guzman's been serving as an army reserve soldier in Afghanistan away from his three children, AJ, Elyssa and Michael. After spending the last 24 hours in hiding not even a rain delay could stop him from catching their game opening pitch.

For returning troops like Guzman re-establishing family ties is one of the first things they are encouraged to do.

"When you're away compartmentalize. You have these boxes, you home life goes into one and the other is your deployment and your life as a soldier," said Guzman.
