Charleston Fine Art Annual set for this weekend

DOWTNOWN (WCSC) - Charleston’s premier fine art weekend will be back this weekend as hundreds of nationally renowned artists descend upon the Lowcountry.

Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association will host its 14th Charleston Fine Art Annual, November 2-4. The Annual will feature paintings, sculptures, glass, mixed media, photography and jewelry from artists throughout the United States.

Events scheduled for the weekend include are openings at CFADA member galleries, plein air painting, gala receptions, a silent auction, art competitions and lectures.

Proceeds will benefit fine art programs at Charleston County High Schools.

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The Halloween spirit is in full-force at a downtown theatre as a supernatural rock opera hits the stage this week.

Dead of the Night will be playing at PURE Theatre Friday, Saturday and Halloween night at 8 p.m. The rock opera, written by London's own Mad Poet of Leicester Square, Willi Jones, will feature such characters as The Time Capturer, The Werewolves of Sennen Cove, Go Go Ghouls and many more fiendish monsters.

Once brought to life, these creatures will take control of the show and send guests on a wild ride.

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - A movie depicting the story of Julius Caesar set in a modern African state is set to premier at the Charleston Public Library Auditorium later this month.

Holy City Shakespeare will hold a viewing party on Saturday, October 27 from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a pre-release copy of Julius Caesar. The movie is directed by Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Director Gregory Doran and was viewed at the World Shakespeare Festival in April 2012.

The 2012 MOJA Arts Festival begins tonight

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Lowcountry is set to begin an 11-day long celebration for African-American and Caribbean arts.

The 29th annual MOJA Arts Festival will offer a variety of family-friendly events September 27 through October 7. Nearly half of MOJA's events are free to the public, while admission to others can range from $5 - $35.

MOJA offers a little something for everyone. Events include visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, poetry, theater, storytelling, food, and much more. 

An opening reception will be held tonight at the Dock Street Theatre at 6 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Charleston Stage to uncover mystery of Edgar Allan Poe's death

 

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Charleston Stage will bring the spooky tale of Edgar Allan Poe’s death to life through an original play this October.

Nevermore, Edgar Allan Poe, The Final Mystery will be playing at the Historic Dock Street Theatre October 19 - November 4.The play will follow Poe's final days, leading up to his mysterious death in 1849.

According to history, Poe boarded a ship in Richmond, Virginia set for New York, but was later found wandering the streets of Baltimore delirious and incoherent. A few days later, the writer was dead.

3rd Annual Open Arts Expo to be held Sunday

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Art organizations from around the Lowcountry will be celebrating the start of the fall arts calendar in Charleston this Sunday.

The 3rd Annual Open Arts Expo will be held at the College of Charleston Cistern. Along with spectacular art, there will be raffles, hands on activities, and live performances.

The event is presented by the Charleston Regional Alliance for the Arts, the College of Charleston, and will include over 35 arts organizations from Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties, according to the event's Facebook page.

The Open Arts Expo is free to the public.
