Artist Robert Lange to give free lecture at The Citadel | Arts & Culture

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Charleston artist and gallery owner Robert Lange will give a free public lecture at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday in Bond Hall Room 165 at The Citadel.

Lange will discuss the creative process behind his latest exhibition, “The Observer,” which is currently on view at Robert Lange Studios at 2 Queen St. A complementary exhibition of behind-the-scene photographs entitled “The Making of The Observer” will be on view in Capers Hall Lobby on lecture night. A reception will follow.

For the past few months, Lange took an eight-inch chrome ball with him everywhere he went. He then photographed his reflection in the ball against the various backdrops of his life. These reflected images became the subject of his new exhibit. This collection of 20 eight-inch circular paintings was meticulously painted to appear as if the canvases are also spherical. Each painting is hung in a custom floating mahogany frame.

Born in 1980, Lange began painting at a young age. When applying to colleges, Lange pursued mathematical studies. After attending Northeastern University on a full math scholarship for two years, he decided to follow his passion for art and transferred to Rhode Island School of Design. After he graduated in 2004, Lange opened his gallery, Robert Lange Studios, in Charleston.

Lange’s original artistic focus was hyper-realist painting, particularly of people. With time, his subjects became more surreal. Lange’s work has been nationally recognized and internationally collected. He has been featured in numerous magazines, including the covers of “American Art Collector” and “Art Magazine,” and a feature in “New American Paintings.”
