Eating disorder-based musical this Friday

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The iaedp Foundation is pleased to announce the special performance of the off-Broadway hit, NOR*MAL, The Musical, at Symposium 2012.

This award-winning production, which takes place on Friday, March 23 at the Charleston Marriott from 8 to 10 p.m., is open to both Symposium 2012 attendees and to the public.

Opera program to present comedic performances

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The College of Charleston Opera Program in the School of the Arts will present two, comedic performances that are sure to draw laughter from audiences. The one-act, operas, “A Game of Chance” and “Gallantry,” combine outlandish antics with the musical integrity of American composers Seymour Barab and Douglas Moore, respectively.

Performances will take place from Saturday, Feb. 25 through Monday, Feb. 27 in the Recital Hall of the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 Saint Philip St. The Saturday and Monday performances will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday's curtain time will be at 3 p.m. only. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students age 22 and under with a valid ID. Reservations can be made by calling the Department of Music at 843-953-5927.

Artist Robert Lange to give free lecture at The Citadel

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Charleston artist and gallery owner Robert Lange will give a free public lecture at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday in Bond Hall Room 165 at The Citadel.

Lange will discuss the creative process behind his latest exhibition, “The Observer,” which is currently on view at Robert Lange Studios at 2 Queen St. A complementary exhibition of behind-the-scene photographs entitled “The Making of The Observer” will be on view in Capers Hall Lobby on lecture night. A reception will follow.

Expert to give lecture on film 'Prince Among Slaves'

Native Liberian Dr. Artemus Gaye will present a film showing and lecture called "Prince Among Slaves" this weekend on Johns Island and in downtown Charleston.

Dr. Gaye is currently a Chicago-based Northwestern University Law School consultant. He is a seventh-generation descendant of Abdul Rahman, an African prince-turned-Mississippi slave who is the subject of the award-winning film narrated by acclaimed actor Mos Def.

The film explores the true story of Rahman’s enslavement in the American South and his fight for freedom which earned him celebrity status and an invitation to dine at the White House during US President John Quincy Adams’ administration before returning to Africa.

The first screening and lecture will be held at the Johns Island Library at 8531 Maybank Highway at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 11.  The second will occur at the Charleston Main Library on Calhoun Street at 3 p.m. on unday February 12.

It's free to attend both events.

Arts for Charity event at Michael Mitchell Gallery this weekend

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The Michael Mitchell Gallery is hosting an "Art and Designer Pop-Up Shop" this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As an Arts for Charity event, the shop is designed to allow a number of vendors a chance to display their products and to donate a percent of the proceeds towards local charities.

Participating vendors include:

  • Lauren Amos Designs
  • MISIU Beauty
  • Seeking Vintage
  • Taashki Handbags

Proceeds will benefit Crisis Ministries, Komen Lowcountry, Roper St. Francis Ryan White Program, Charleston Waterkeeper, Friends of MUSC Children’s Hospital, and the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.

The Michael Mitchell Gallery is located at 483 King Street in downtown Charleston.

Chinese Association to celebrate Chinese New Year

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The Chinese Association of Greater Charleston is hosting a Spring Festival this Saturday celebrating the Chinese New Year.

The festival is open to the public and will take place on January 21 at the Burke Middle High School Auditorium.   Door opens at 1 p.m. and the celebration starts at 2 p.m.
