CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Lowcountry residents are encouraged to join hundreds of thousands across the nation in taking a 30-minute walk on Wednesday to improve heart health.

Wednesday, April 3 is National Walking Day, and The American Heart Association, MUSC Health, and The InterTech Group is getting in on the action. They are asking the public to take 30 minutes of their day to take a brisk walk.

Experts say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, but less than 50-percent of adults hit that number.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The American Cancer Society is preparing to launch a new research study, and is looking for help from Lowcountry residents.

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are asked to enroll in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3. The study will be used to help researchers understand lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

The ACS is looking for 800 residents in Charleston to take place in the study. The public can enroll online at cps3charleston.org for one of the following dates and locations:

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Before you head over to MUSC to donate blood to the American Red Cross, you should take note of the services new hours of operation.

The MUSC donation center will now be open Monday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. American Red Cross officials say these new hours match donor’s preferred times for making blood donations, as well as accommodate MUSC employees.

The American Red Cross blood donor room is located in room 279 of the main hospital, which is located at 171 Ashley Ave.

The donation center can be reached at 843-792-1015.

MUSC psychiatry department receives three awards

MUSC psychiatry department receives three awards

 

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The Medical University of South Carolina is receiving national recognition for its psychiatry department.

MUSC's Institute of Psychiatry has been named Hospital of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) South Carolina Chapter. The institute is being selected for its advancements in brain stimulation treatment, as well as its role in public health and advocacy for people with mental illness.

Two employees have also been recognized by NAMI. Elliot Levy, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor in the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences was named Mental Health Professional of the Year. Mary Ann Gallagher, a volunteer at the IOP Seasons partial hospitalization program, was named Volunteer of the Year.

This is the third time the hospital has been recognized by NAMI, also receiving the award in 2008 and 2010.

CrossFitters battle for Charleston Harbor

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Brawn and brains will collide on the banks of the Cooper River as hundreds of the region's best athletes compete for cash prizes, pride, and their personal best at Integrity's Revenge: The Battle for Charleston Harbor on October 6-7, 2012 at the Maritime Center in downtown, Charleston.

This is the second year for the competition, which attracts hundreds of Crossfit diehards from around the lowcountry and the entire US. There are currently 400 athletes registered to compete. Integrity's Revenge is part of the 2012 Garage Game Series and hosted by Crossfit Integrity in West Ashley.

Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Expo to be held Sept. 8

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Marion Square Park will be the site of this year's Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Expo.

The 4th annual Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Expo will be held Saturday, September 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The expo will coincide National Suicide Prevention month.

According to a release from the Department of Veterans Affairs, suicide is one of the leading causes of death nationally and affects people of all ages, ethnic and socioeconomic background.

"One of the best ways to try and prevent suicide is by disseminating information about risk facts associated with suicide and providing the means for assistance, such as crises lines to friends, co-workers, and families," said Dr. Mark De Santis, suicide prevention coordinator for the Ralph Johnson VA Center in Charleston.

A number of treatment specialists and organizations will be on hand to answer questions and give assistance.
