Police: 10-year-old boy fabricated story of downtown rape | News
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Officials with the Charleston Police Department say that an investigation into a reported sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy by a man on America Street on June 22 has revealed that the incident did not occur.
According to police, the boy spent the night at his best friend's apartment on America Street the night he said the incident occurred.
An incident report states that several witnesses, including the boy's best friend, said he was at the apartment all night.
The boy originally told investigators he was walking on Drake Street toward his home on Amherst Street when he was grabbed by a man who sexually assaulted him.
The investigation revealed through witnesses and camera footage of the Mall Park area that the boy did not encounter a man who he said sexually assaulted him.
Police say the boy and his best friend were at Mall Park that night watching the Charleston Inner-City Midnight Basketball Tournament. According to police, after the tournament, the boy went home with his best friend.
The detective could not determine why the boy reported the fabricated story to family members and the police.
