Archeologists return to Gaillard Center in search for bones | News
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Archeologists are back to work Thursday morning searching for unmarked graves around the Gaillard Center after a construction crew unearthed bones on Feb. 5.
According to a police report, workers uncovered parts of a human skull, jaw, and teeth while using a backhoe at the Gaillard Center on Tuesday, Feb. 5. The excavation has been postponed for the last couple days due to weather.
The remains were unearthed near the corner of George and Answer streets.
Officials with the mayor's office said the bones date back to the mid-1700's. A search of city records found there were no houses in that area in the 1750's and no record of graveyards.
Crews will begin looking for more bones Thursday morning, weather permitting.
