Local artist donates paintings to City Market

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Jonathan Green has chosen to gift the City of Charleston the rights to use the images of his paintings, Beach Market and Contemplation for the creation of two outstanding murals to be placed in the City Market of Charleston. The murals will be placed on the walls of the newly renovated City Market just outside the Great Hall.

Green, a native of the Lowcountry of South Carolina is considered by many art critics and reviewers as one of the nation’s most outstanding African-American artists and highly recognized visual master for capturing Southern culture and traditions.  His high level of social interest and championship of the visual arts in educational, medical, cultural, and social institutions throughout Charleston for the past twenty-five years has been remarkable. He created a major mural for Sanders Clyde Elementary School when the school was rebuilt.

City to award excellent design in Charleston

The City of Charleston will hold their first annual presentation of “The City of Charleston Award for Design Excellence” in late October.

These awards will be presented by the City’s Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability (PP&S) at an inaugural ceremony on October 19, 2011 during National Design Week.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. has authorized PP&S to: 1) encourage the highest quality of design and construction in Charleston, and 2) administer the City’s zoning, preservation and design regulations and processes.   Mayor Riley said, “These awards are one way for us to recognize architecture and design that most exemplifies our aspirations for the future of the city.  They also recognize the most successful outcomes of City staff’s collaboration with private design and development teams.”

The awards are for new construction.  New construction may constitute completely new buildings and spaces or substantial additions to existing places.
