Charleston Co. State of the School's Address set for May 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County School District Superintendent Nancy McGinley will go over public school accomplishments and future goals at the 2013 State of the School's Address on May 1.

The address will be held in the TD Arena Hospitality Suite on Wednesday, May 1 at 11: 45 a.m. McGinley will be joined by local elected officials and community and business partners.

Superintendent McGinley is expected to reveal what CCSD plans to accomplish over the next year and over the next five years. 

She will also touch on the progress Charleston County public schools have made in certain areas, as well as areas of growth.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Trident Technical College is ramping up its summertime kids camps to offer even more fun-filled opportunities to Lowcountry youngins.

The Kids’ College at Trident Technical College will offer 104 summer camps for children ages 7-16. Originally held at TTC’s Main Campus in North Charleston, the camps will expand out to Palmer Campus in downtown Charleston, Berkeley Campus in Moncks Corner, Mt. Pleasant Campus, Dorchester County QuickJobs Training Center in St. George and St. Paul’s Parish Site in Hollywood.

There will be additional camps offered online.

Traditional camp topics include STEM subjects, culinary and baking, LEGO robots, creative arts, SAT prep, video game and mobile application programming, and 21st century life skills.

Burke Middle High School holds student career fair

 

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - Students at Burke Middle High School recently got the opportunity to rub elbows with business professionals and college representatives.

The school held its 2nd Annual Career Symposium and College Fair on Friday, March 22. The event featured over 50 speakers from all around the state.

Career speakers included Kelly Franz, chef from Magnolia’s; Clint Lucas, Vice President Human Resources of Showa Denko Carbon, Inc; and Melissa Loy from Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology.

A number of college representatives were also in attendance from schools like The Citadel, College of Charleston, Trident Technical College, Benedict College and Virginia College.

The students were able to attend four 30-minute career sessions, as well as take part in on-the-spot admission and scholarship opportunities.

American Board teacher certification members continue in Feb.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence will hold multiple speaking events in Charleston to educate the public on becoming a certified teacher.

Meetings will be held throughout Charleston during the month of February, and each will feature a representative with the American Board. 

In addition to learning about how to become a teacher, participants will also be able to explore exam preparation materials and enroll in the American Board program.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County students will take part in a district-wide spelling bee Thursday night.

The Charleston County School District spelling be will be held tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the first floor boardroom of the CCSD District Office located at 75 Calhoun Street.

The annual spelling bee will narrow the field down to 18 students who will advance to the Lowcountry's SpellBound.
