Delta Air Lines adds new flight to New York

Charleston, SC (WCSC) - Delta Air Lines has announced today that they will soon be offering non-stop flights to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Passengers will be able to purchase a ticket to board the 70-seat jet, which will begin taking flight on Thursday, June 7, 2012.

The addition of JFK International Airport means that Charleston now has jet service to all three major New York area airports.

The flight will depart Charleston International Airport at 11:40 a.m. and arrive at JFK at 1:40 p.m. The return flight will depart JFK at 7:30 p.m. and arrive back in Charleston at 10 p.m.

Sheriff's office receives DUI enforcement grant

CHARLESTON COUNTY (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office was recently awarded a $229,833 grant issued by the South Carolina Department of Safety’s Office of Highway Safety which will be used to create a DUI Enforcement Team within the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The grant will fund two full-time deputies, two vehicles and associated equipment. The primary function of the DUI Enforcement Team will be to prevent and reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities by conducting proactive DUI measures. These measures include enforcement, education and participating in Sober or Slammer campaign activities throughout the year.

The grant will be a three-year allocation that will put extra deputies on the street with the expressed objective of targeting roadway DUI drivers.

Segway tours to get rolling in Mt. Pleasant

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Adding to the plethora of activities and historic tours available in Charleston, S.C., is the just opened Segway of Charleston in Mount Pleasant. A Segway is a self-balancing personal transportation device on two wheels that is a fun and easy way to tour or travel.

Starting just 20 feet from the water’s edge, Segway of Charleston offers guided tours that begin on plush grass overlooking the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point, the Ravenel Bridge and the beautiful Charleston Harbor. The tour glides over smooth sidewalks to the U.S. Cold War Submarine Memorial and on to Mount Pleasant Park where the tour segways down the dock.

Maintenance work prompts closure on Courtenay Drive

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The southbound lane of Courtenay Drive at the intersection of Bee Street is closed on Wednesday for SCE&G maintenance work.

The work, which is going on near the MUSC Wellness Center, will continue at least until 6:30 p.m.  Motorists should exercise caution in the area and consider using alternative routes if possible.

CARTA appoints Wilkinson as Interim Director

DOWNTOWN (WCSC) - The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) named Christine Wilkinson as Interim Executive Director today. She will begin her new position, which was previously held by Howard Chapman, immediately.

 “I look forward to passing the reigns to the capable hands of Christine Wilkinson,” said Howard Chapman, retiring CARTA Executive Director.  “As transit administrator, she has been a great asset to the organization and will, no doubt, do a fantastic job during this transition.”

Wilkinson was previously a Transit Administrator for CARTA, a role she occupied since June 1997.

Bike2Work over the Ashley this Friday

In honor of the nationwide Bike to Work Day, there will be a Bike2Work event at South Windermere Shopping Center this Friday, May 20 at 7:30 a.m.

Participants will begin gathering at 7:30 a.m. and there will be a brief rally at 8 a.m.

Several downtown streets closed due to Civil War events

Because of the Civil War events scheduled at White Point Garden, several downtown streets will be closed early this week.

East Battery and Murray Boulevard from South Battery to King Street will close beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The closures will last until mid-day on Tuesday.
